Olds college introduces program on cannabis production

In the last few years, the cannabis industry has seen significant growth. Buoyed by the fact that cannabis is being legalized in the U.S., many investors have already taken on an ambitious gamble.

And now, Canada can smoke up too without any fear after recreational cannabis was legalized in the country. The Cannabis Act was passed in the Senate a few weeks back with a vote of 52-29. Canadians would be able to smoke and grow cannabis even in their home come this September.

It seems the whole nation is catching up to the new development and amidst all this, Alberta’s Olds College has already started a Cannabis Production Program. The course will be offered under the Continuing Education mode only.

Students will now be able to enroll for the online course which will also feature a field study for around a couple of weeks that aims to help them get the practical experience they would need to succeed. The course consists of four courses- Introduction to Horticulture Production, Introduction to Crop Production and Facilities, Cannabis Legislation and Documentation and Horticulture for Cannabis Production.

Chief Innovation Officer and Vice President of Academic & Student Experience, Debbie Thompson said that Olds College has been giving its support to horticulture for more than five decades now. It has delivered practical experience when it comes to ensuring proper plant and landscape management as well as ensuring that pests, water systems, and soil remain in proper conditions.

Thompson also remarked that they are looking forward to their new association with the Cannabis Education and Research Industry Advisory Committee. The development, he believes, will help them work towards creating new research opportunities for the cannabis industry that will, in turn, help students to do more.

The practical eperience they need

The students will apply their knowledge in practical settings in just the environment they are looking for, provided by Terra Life Sciences and Sundial. Sundial is a medical cannabis producer and combines innovative horticulture methods with proven farming techniques to grow selected strains of cannabis. Terra Life Sciences is an international company engaged in the creation of cannabis-based medical products. It also invests in research and clinical trials to come up with world-class innovation in medical marijuana.

CEO of Sundial, Torsten Kuenzlen said that Sundial was committed to the development of the right skill sets when it comes to the cannabis industry workers in Alberta. The Olds College partnership, they believe, would help create local employment job opportunities.

President and CEO of Life Sciences, Dr. Anil Jain, commented that the program was something that is sure to add in value to Old College’s curriculum and can help them ensure that there are only trained professionals when it comes to the medical cannabis field. He added that with the partnership with Olds College, it’s surely going to get a whole lot more exciting.

The course, it should be remembered, has already started from July 3 this year.

Apart from the above, Olds College has also launched another Continuing Education program called Cannabis Retail Advisor that will commence from the coming fall.
